Ceteareth-20 is a nonionic surfactant and emulsifier. It's a polyethylene glycol (PEG) ether of cetearyl alcohol, meaning it's formed by reacting cetearyl alcohol with ethylene oxide. This results in a water-soluble, creamy substance used to create stable emulsions in cosmetic formulations, such as lotions and creams. It helps to blend oil and water phases, improving the texture and spreadability of the product. It can also act as a solubilizer, helping to incorporate other ingredients into the formulation. While generally considered safe at low concentrations, concerns exist regarding potential contamination with 1,4-dioxane, a known carcinogen, during the manufacturing process. The presence and level of 1,4-dioxane is highly dependent on the manufacturing process and should be checked with the supplier.
